If I go on,
Where will I end?
If I collide,
How will I find strength.
If I trip and fall,
How deep will it be?
If I jump,
How can I tell I ended in the same place?
If I go under,
How will I know I am not on top?
If I give up,
Who will be to blame?
If I think it through,
One Is to blame.
If I reflect,
I will conclude one thing.
If I gave up,
It's only because I'm my own worst enemy.
Where will I end?
If I collide,
How will I find strength.
If I trip and fall,
How deep will it be?
If I jump,
How can I tell I ended in the same place?
If I go under,
How will I know I am not on top?
If I give up,
Who will be to blame?
If I think it through,
One Is to blame.
If I reflect,
I will conclude one thing.
If I gave up,
It's only because I'm my own worst enemy.

This takes me back. When I was teaching the challenge put to us was always "How will you know when you've succeeded?" This works for me. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWe are at times our worst enemy. Giving up is not an option. I like the way you ended this, as if an epiphany just took place within your soul. Very good work. I look forward to more of your work.
ReplyDelete@Dave King, thank you for your comment! I am glad that you could relate.

Great poem, Erick - we are so often the worst person in our own lives, yet we rarely treat others with the same disrespect.
