Huntington Beach, CA Part of Orange County |
Once named Orange County,
For its abundance of citrus,
Now sits atop, captivating.
It is mostly viewed amongst,
Those seeking extravagance,
The cities that were once treasured;
Familial, comfortable, calm.
Now inhabits the most busy cities,
With shopping malls in every corner.
Has it really lost its tradition?
Where do these orange trees lie?
They are lost; people’s ambitions,
Has erased what this county had left
Of the old living cultural tradition.

Reavealling the truth - nice work Erick.
ReplyDeleteA definite 'slice' of reality in this one, the picture makes me think of industrial smoke blooming on the horizon not orange trees ;^)
ReplyDeleteIt's sad that things like this happen. What a contrast from what it once was.
ReplyDeleteHello Ollie,
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your comment. Hope to have you back!
Hello @rch,
ReplyDeleteYes, that is exactly what I wanted to depict, the growth of industrial contamination, vs the growth of orange trees. Also the change in culture here.

Hello Laura Maria,
ReplyDeleteYes, indeed, it is sad to see these things happen. Sometimes it is inevitable. I was reading a book yesterday that talked about how a Colorado city changed, but a businessman there went back and thought that it was not negative. He called it "progress." Interesting perspectives!

Isn't this the sad truth of 'progress'. Oh, how much we loose beneath that word. Every year valuable farmland in our communities is being buried in concrete and sub-divisions...
ReplyDeleteHa! I just read your above comment now! h-m-m-m!:)
Thank-you for sharing.
Hello Janet!
ReplyDeleteYes, it is the sad truth. Indeed, these farmlands are becoming scarce. So much rich soil that is meant to be used for farmland, used for roads instead. We shall see where this takes society. Not everyone can be businessman. We need farmers also.

That right there is the first photo of orange county I've ever seen. Or the first anything of orange county I've ever seen. It wasn't like that in my head? But I don't know really what was. Just a feeling, maybe.
ReplyDeleteHello Jessica,
ReplyDeletemy purpose was not to point out the negative side of Orange County. The picture you see there is a factory; they are not everywhere in Orange County. Orange County is mostly now building and attractions. Take Disneyland for instance, that used to be farmland. Huntington Beach is a beautiful place. The sea is an amazing view. I will post pictures on here as a blog post to share. I posted this poem to show the changes that have occurred. Hope to see you on here soon!

ReplyDeleteHello Shreya,
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting my poetry blog. Also thank you for commenting.
Erick, I really hadn't realized that Orange County had been named for the orange trees...so I learned something from your poem. So much of 'progress' really doesn't seem to be improvement, does it? You wrote a thought-provoking poem!
ReplyDeleteHello Mary,
ReplyDeleteYes, like you said, so much of 'progress' really doesn't seem to be improvement. Time will tell. Thank you for reading and commenting!

I like the first lines... catchy opening....
ReplyDeleteIt feels like reading a fairy tale... a tale of a country... :)
Hello @Neni,
